Helena Florence Normanton. Helena was a feminist but is best known for her campaign for women to be allowed entry into the legal profession. She was the first woman to be admitted as a student to the Bar at her second attempt in 1919. That was Helena Normanton’s prediction as she made her first application to be admitted to the Middle Temple in 1918. It was declined but she refused to give up and lodged a petition at the House of Lords.

She was not just the first woman to be admitted to an Inn of Court, hold briefs in the High Court and Old Bailey, and (as one of two women) be made a King’s Counsel, but a prolific author, leading feminist and speaker who entranced audiences at home and abroad. In 1922 Helena Normanton was called to the Bar of England and Wales, making her the first woman to practice as a barrister.

Her research has centred on feminist perspectives on Law, in particular the legal history of first women lawyers. She is the co-author of two textbooks: Women and Law and Gender and Law, and published a biography of Helena Normanton, one of the pioneers of the movement to open the legal profession to women in 1919.
